When is coffee organic? |
|
 |
How can we be sure? The law says that the name ‘organic’ may be used only if the products meet certain European standards. Only then is organic coffee reliable. VELT and Ecocert are the Belgian control organisations which are recognised by the European Union to monitor and guarantee the standards in the stages of cultivation, processing, transport, and storage. In the coffee-producing countries, international and neutral organisations recognised by VELT or Ecocert do the same. If they approve of the product, in this case, the coffee, it is awarded the internationally recognised 'Biogarantie' label. Coffee that’s not just fair, but also great! Aside from the health issue, taste and quality are important aspects that should not be ignored. In addition to ecological and environment-friendly production and packaging, coffee should also simply taste really good. Because a good taste lasts longer. Alert consumers may be looking for foods that fit in with many different ideals, but they are really faithful only to products that taste good too. There is no reason why organically-grown coffee and coffee produced by socially responsible projects should not be judged by the same strict quality standards as any other coffee. Every coffee-lover is entitled to good coffee.
